Another one...just doing a search.  This is ridiculous!  (And I am on Windows 11, not 10)

I start up Accordance and my screen looks like this.  You really need to fix your Windows version 14!

What is going on with Accordance for Windows?  Why is it so unstable (especially with larger workspaces)?

On your crash reports, we would need additional steps to reproduce so we could see what is causing the crash reports.

For your startup issue with Accordance, I'd recommend first trying the Safe Mode instructions here:

If that doesn't work, then I would recommend reaching out to Technical Support here:

https://www.accordancebible.com/sources-of-support/

I run Accordance 14 daily on my Windows 11 PC, and I'm not experiencing the startup issues you're experiencing. If Safe Mode doesn't resolve the issue, then Tech Support can definitely assist.

We have had some reports of some random crashes on Windows, and many of those should be address in 14.0.9 coming up.

Okay, I think I will reach out to tech support and see what is going on.

I sent them Windows crash logs and info how to repeat the crash.

Yeah, I beta test software all the time.  This is one of the most unstable production level apps I have seen.

Here is an easily repeatable crash using my custom workspace with 6 tabs with an average of 4 resources each.

I removed the tab ties and was able to do the search okay.  So, multiple tab ties seems to be a problem.

Thanks! I'll test this out on my Windows PC next time I'm at it. I have a beta of 14.0.9 as well I can test it on and see if it resolves the issue.

If you want early access to the 14.0.9 beta, let me know and I can send it to you.

Multiple tab ties is definitely a problem for me as well. More complicated workspaces do seem to engender more random crashes. On one of my most complicated workspaces with plenty of tab ties, Tech support was able to duplicate the random nature of the crashes on Windows but not on Mac. The more complicated the work space, the less random the crashes, and the easier for Tech support to verify the problem.

There's been several threads about this, and one of the common features of these crash reports is that they give an 'out of memory' signal but show that plenty of RAM and Disc space available. Both of tony10000's two crash reports here also have this. Is Windows Accordance unable to access all of the memory available? Or are the crash reports providing misleading information.

A while ago, Nathan said the 14.0.9 is able to fix some (a lot?) of these random crashes. If that's so, why not release it already? Did the 'fix' cause other problems?

We're still beta testing it since it fixes some additional issues across both platforms (not just Windows Random Crashes), and we've had reports of a few things we need to address before releasing it publicly. When it's ready to release, we'll release it.

I've been told that "Out of Memory" is a common error message on Windows bug reports that doesn't always necessarily mean "out of memory". Someone with more knowledge about those than I may be able to chime in.

Yes, that's been said before, and I mentioned it above as well ("are the crash reports providing misleading information"), which is why I previously recommended looking into how these crash reports are programmed. If they are not giving helpful information, I recommend trying to make the crash reports more informative for real issues.

Windows 11

Accordance 14.0.9b4

Similar problem as OP.

Program had been running fine all day. I was simply scrolling through my text and I got a same/similar popup error message.

Here's my crash log:

@mgvh That looks to be in the 14.0.9 beta. Go ahead and also report this in the beta forums so our programmers can see it. Seems we need to do a little more work.

@robrecht We have someone looking into that, although I'm not sure how Windows Crash Reports are generated. I may need to get more details on how that could be tweaked. I'd also like to see a prompt in there asking the customer to include the steps to re-produce the crash, since right now, sometimes we get people just emailing the logs to support without any further info.

Nathan, has anyone figured out what the innovation(s) in Version 14 were that started causing all of these problems? Rather than expecting everyone to do all of this reporting of the various steps that lead to random crashes, maybe Accordance should be looking very closely at the changes in Version 14 and figure out why they created the problems in the first place? Or, once a problem is identified with a workspace in Version 14, is it also tested on a machine running Version 13 to verify that this is a new problem with Version 14? Has there been any thought given to reimbursing people for purchasing Version 14?

The Out of Memory errors have to do with the fact that Windows x86 apps can only address 4GB of memory space:

"X86 client versions of Windows don’t support physical memory above the 4GB mark, so they can’t access these remapped regions."

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/memory/memory-limits-for-windows-releases

I hope that Accordance can port to a x64 Windows app soon so that your entire system memory can be used.

Nathan speculated a while back that maybe the problems with Windows Accordance are caused by it still being a 32-bit program, and that converting it to a 64-bit program would be a very time-consuming process. Later he said that this is not really the problem, 'though it still would be a good thing to eventually make Windows Accordance into a 64-bit application. At the time he thought the random crashes were being fixed in a much simpler way in a new beta, but that apparently is not yet the case (cf mgvh's crash report on 14.0.9b4 above). So maybe it will be necessary to upgrade Windows Accordance to a 64-bit program in order to fix the random crashes in more complex workstations??

"A 32-bit memory address system can point to up to 2^32 (4294967296) different memory locations (which is exactly 4GB of storage) while 64-bit can address can point upto 2^64 locations (~16 trillion GB)." Source

If I recall correctly, Mac Accordance upgraded to a 64-bit program with Version 12. So why is Windows Version 14 still only 32 bit? Is it to maintain backwards compatibility on older Windows-based PCs? Are the problems with random freezes/crashes in Accordance Windows occurring more frequently on newer Windows machines with more RAM?

I tried slimming down to a 4 tab workspace with tab links (14 resources total) and a two word search crashed it.

Please port to x64!

We have the port to 64 Bit on our list for the Windows app, but it will be a time-consuming process when we do it. The Mac version was ported to 64 Bit first since Apple makes it far easier to port Mac apps to 64 Bit due to Apple requiring Mac apps to be 64 Bit. It was an overall not-too-complicated process to do it on the Mac. Windows, on the other hand, doesn't have quite that ease of porting in their programming tools. :-)

There are other things we can do in the meantime that we're doing with 14.0.9 that will be able to alleviate many of the "random crashes" until we can go 64 Bit.

I'm not aware of testing between 13 and 14. In terms of workspaces, I have it on the list as well to look into if there are changes that could be made to improve workspaces.

Except for a handful of customers who requested refunds on Accordance 14, most customers have successfully upgraded and are having a positive experience with it. I'm running exclusively 14 across all my devices, and I successfully used it for "mission-critical" PhD work without any major "show stopping" issues even before many of the .0.x updates were released.

What Windows PC hardware are you using?

HP Notebook, Windows 11 Pro, Intel CPU, 12GB RAM, 1TB SSD. I can try looking up the detailed specs if need be. I've thought about eventually throwing 16GB RAM in it.

Kind of "midrange". Fast enough for a notebook but not as fast as some desktops.
