Recorded for Accordance eAcademy, February 17, 2022. Before the Gospel stories were written, they were spoken. It is still even possible sometimes in the Greek to “hear” the voice of the original teller. Most English translations, however, strive for an eloquent literary rendering that smooths out the oral character. In this session, Mark Vitalis Hoffman will share some of work he is doing on a translation project of the gospel of Mark highlighting the gospel’s oral features. He will show how using the tools, translations, and grammatical and exegetical resources in Accordance can aid in hearing that original voice and ways it might be expressed in an English translation intended to be “performed.” While this session attends to English translations, it will be most helpful for those with some knowledge of Greek. Dr. Mark G. Vitalis Hoffman, MDiv (Luther [Northwestern] Theological Seminary), PhD (Yale University), is Glatfelter Professor of Biblical Studies at United Lutheran Seminary. Previously, he had fourteen years of parish experience in Minnesota and North Dakota. Dr. Hoffman is co-author of the Atlas of the Bible (Fortress Press, 2019).
