I Have Dumped Accordance 14

I've had no serious issues with Accordance 14. I use it daily on a Windows 11 desktop PC and also on a Windows 11 laptop. There are some minor bugs but nothing that would make me want to revert to v.13. Maybe I just don't use those features where the more serious bugs are occurring.

I uninstalled v14 a little after first installing but am anxious to try again. I'm not ready to give up on Accordance either as software or company over this. Yes, they made some big mistakes on this release but I think they are committed to getting bugs fixed as soon as possible. Having been the sole programer for a company's software when I was working I know some bug pitfalls. When software is released with bugs a few questions tell me something about the programers and company. 1. Do they acknowledge them right away (Acc did).  2. Do they offer an easy way to report bugs? (Acc does). 3. Are bug fixes regularly being released? (I guess they are but I'm not running v14 so can't say with any authority). 4. Do they not only own up to the bugs but do not try to blame the user? ("your holding it wrong"). To me, the way Accordance is handling all their problems and steps to fix bugs while continuing to communicate is enough for me.

My own plan is to reinstall v14 when the next bug fix is released.

I can't explain how grateful I am that my Pastor uses a Mac and Accordance.  😅

When V14 came out, I uninstalled it within about 15 minutes of using it due to all the bugs that immediately showed up.

I re-installed after it seemed the naughty pictures thing was no longer an issue.  I have been using V14 for at least a couple of weeks now without any issues.

This isn't to say that others aren't still struggling with V14, though.  Hopefully, the next update will help them.

"naughty pictures thing"????? what was that?

There was a bug that caused the web browser in Accordance to pull up porn.

The following post does a good job explaining the root cause behind the issue:

😲😲😲 wow. Hate to say it but that sounds more like sabotage or a hacking incident than a mistake.

EDIT: Also, I noticed that the browser in v13 is not working at all for me, it won't load any pages, not even Help pages. Could the server issue have impacted the browser function in v13?

Is it just Accordance pages or are no web pages at all loading in 13?

Actually I think it's a pretty good explanation of why it was not sabotage or hacking.  Although I'm curious about more of the details about the CDN configuration and whether part of the problem was not taking into account the DNS Time-To-Live, it seemed pretty coherent to me.  I don't see any evidence of sabotage—although that possibility definitely crossed my mind when I first heard about this whole issue.

I think we want to avoid speculation as it just feeds rumors.  I would love more details but I'm fairly confident that we have enough details to say

  1. there's nothing in the information presented to suggest that a bug in Accordance itself directly lead to anyone accidentally opening porn
  2. there's nothing in the information presented to suggest that hacking or sabotage was involved

If you want to consider the use of insecure HTTP as a bug, you could argue that, but I would argue that it's simply a poor decision.  And that was not sufficient to cause a problem anyway—although using HTTPS would apparently have been sufficient to prevent a problem.

Understanding exactly what went wrong here is above my pay grade (and apparently others' pay grade, too), but the above quoted portion is a pretty low standard to clear....

Everything is working today. Nothing was loading at the time (wikipedia, perseus, etc.), not just Accordance pages. It was after 1am Eastern. Is it possible that servers were down for maintenance or something?

It's not that I want to believe it was sabotage, though hacking and trolling are so common now that those are not hard to believe. Given the information presented I would have to believe that a comedy of errors just so happened to create a scenario that led users of a Christian bible software program to a porn site by pure coincidence. To your point, HTTPS would have easily prevented the problem (it's not like HTTPS is some new innovative technology that no one knows about), and it just so happened that the new site that took over the old IP address was a porn site that redirected to its homepage instead of returning an error.

But the issue's been fixed, and my browser is working in v13 now so I won't keep speculating. Carry on.

Even though I'm primarily a user of another product I do like Accordance for certain things. I hope v14 gets all of its kinks worked out soon. In the meantime I'll stick with v13. We all benefit from there being more than one bible software company and competition is always healthy, it gives us choices and makes the companies better.

It’s possible. I’m not 100% sure on that, as to my knowledge, the Accordance Web Browser works independent of our servers. I had a ton of web issues over the weekend though in general, so I wonder if something was amiss somewhere on the Internet.

If porn were rare, this might seem like an odd coincidence.  But I think the situation is more like playing Russian roulette with 5 bullets in a 6-shooter instead of 1—the odds are extremely high in such a situation that the site would have porn.  (I don't have actual data to vouch for the real proportions, and I don't want to google for them, but whether my analogy is mathematically accurate or not, you get the idea: porn is absolutely not rare.)

Seems my Internet issues were local only, so that’s probably not what caused your browser issues. Honestly, not sure what happened there. If you encounter it again, let me know.

Have Joel and Mark been replaced as well after they left?

By the way, Joel is still involved in activities at Accordance. He’s actively working on certain projects at the moment.
