Offensive Modules

While searching for new modules I came across this title.

‘Who needs Theo Logy?” (See attachment) I believe there is a place for all of God’s creatures. We should take great care to avoid singling out individuals in an attempt to deliberately make them feel unwanted. I’m not sure what doctrinal issues Messrs. Grenz and Olsen have against Mr. Logy but they should take great care to avoid ad hominem arguments of others or just personal hit pieces. I’m sure Theodore is delightful company if one could only get past his personal hygiene issues.

We might ask the question, who needs ticks and fleas? But the fact that God put them here means they must serve a purpose even if we cannot see or understand it. I feel so sorry for what Theo might be going through. Perhaps we should include him in our prayers and in the future take greater care when choosing to publish modules with seemingly offensive titles.

Sometimes I think reading beyond the title might help my social life, but I digest…

Well, I'm so tired of losin'
I got nothin' to do
With all day to do it

Well, I'd go out cruisin'
But I've no place to go
And all night to get there

Is it any wonder I'm not crazy
Is it any wonder I'm sane at all

Is it any wonder I've got too much time on my hands
It's tickin' away with my sanity
I've got too much time on my hands

With all due respect, I think you're reading the title wrong/right. The way it's displayed on the cover can be misleading as it should be read as "Who Needs Theology?". The book appears to be a defense of everyone studying theology proper.

Or have I misread your post?

When the original poster gets his tongue out of his cheek, he may respond. But I think it is stuck pretty far in there; the pain must be excruciating.

I have a hard time with tongue in cheek comments. Hard for me to determine if a joke or serious. I did think he may have meant it as a joke but rarely see such comments in these forums. I guess I should have waited to see how others responded.

I take it the OP is giving us all a good chuckle, but I could be wrong.

I've read the book. It's a good defense of Theology for the non-specialist and one I'd consider handing someone to read if they want to know what and why I invested a large portion of my life and money on a PhD program. It's also a useful work for students who need to be introduced to Theology before officially studying it, maybe in a high school or Bible college setting.

In terms of books with interesting titles, Accordance only sells books. We have no control over titles or content. That's up to the authors. If someone doesn't like what one author has chosen, as Adrian Rogers once said, you can come up and apologize to him after the service. :-)

LOL

As a graphic design instructor this cover isn't bad. However, when we create, we need to remember Gestalt psychology. This is where our mind tries to connect the dots. The attached image is just a collection of 6 shapes. But our mind seeks to make sense of it and create closure, something recognizable. So we force it to be a soccer ball. If you didn't now what a soccer ball is, would you see a soccer ball? Probably not. If you've never seen any ball, you wouldn't create a ball at all. (We do this with hermeneutics as well.) Book titles such as this should avoid odd breaks in words.

Theo is a proper name that is easily recognized so our brains automatically see "Who Needs Theo?" I can't be the only one. See 2nd attachment for a good example of this type of cover done well.

Apparently, the 8 clues I left weren't obvious enough.

"Mr. Logy"

"Personal Hygiene"

"Ticks and fleas"

"Theo"

"Reading beyond the title"

"My social life"

"I digest" (Surely that one was recognizable)

And the song "Too much time on my hands"

My attempt at humor has failed. I'm as worthless as ticks and fleas.

See there, I tried again. It's a reference back to the original quote. I've been reduced to having to explain my humor. I guess I should stick to graphic design because I'm failing as a comedian.

By the way, I'm having my tongue surgically removed from my cheek. The doctors say I can have the procedure completed after they repair my ego.

If I have to explain this one, I'm getting my tantō.

Perhaps it might have been clearer had the title read: WHO NEEDS THE OLOGY ?

I enjoyed it, Joseph. Took me a few moments, but then I saw the cover. Horrendous design.

I see it now. Thanks for the info! If I were you, I'd seriously ask various publishers to hire you as their cover designer. Then these wacky designs would be a thing of the past. :-)

Something I need to keep in mind when I publish my dissertation. I may need your services. :-)

It's not really a bad cover. Stuff gets by people all the time, that's why we have critique days in school. Multiple eyes prevents crappy designs. I've got lots of students who would love the chance to help design book covers and the interiors. I've designed a few myself. One that should be published soon. I really like that aspect of design.

Once you see something it's hard to unsee it. Like Church-fil-a.

Somebody actually designed this and didn't notice. Or maybe they did and were just being silly.

Whoever designed Church-Fil-A must have been hungry for Chick-Fil A on Sundays, a mistake I made once. Heard a good church service and pulled up at Chick-Fil-A to have a good meal afterwards, then I realized, not today...
