Search Accordance Website with LaunchBar

Dr. Nathan Parker

Recommended Posts

I've recently downloaded LaunchBar, and I've found a way to add some custom websites I frequently search to it, allowing me to bring up the website I want to search in LaunchBar, enter my term, press return, and have it instantly search the custom website.

I know how to add the custom search URL's to LaunchBar's index. However, I'm not sure what is the correct search URL I'd need to add for the Accordance website, and where I'd need to substitute the search term for the asterisk in the search URL so the search will run correctly.

Has anyone else attempted this with adding the Accordance website to LaunchBar? That'd give me a quick a easy method to search with it when I need to quickly find something on the Accordance website.

Thanks!

I don't have Lauchbard, but I've done the same thing with Alfred.  You should be able to port the following steps easily enough Launchbar.  The key is the URL scheme:

Thanks. In video 5 here, it says I need to replace the search term with an asterisk:

Do I simply take your link and replace alfred with the asterisk?

Thanks!

Where I have {query} in Alfred, replace that with asterisk(*) and use that as your URL template.    Just as in Alfred, you can create multiple search templates — I have one for verses and one for word search.  Those should both be self-explanatory from the two screen captures in the post I linked hopefully.

Thanks. I'm not seeing your screen captures. Also, would this search AccordanceBible.com or the Accordance app itself? What I mainly need is a way to search for products on AccordnaceBible.com (although if there's a way to pull off sending searches to Accordance itself, that'd be fun too).

Sorry, those screen captures are in the link that I provided in my first post:

https://www.accordancebible.com/forums/topic/23186-tip-for-alfred-users-on-mac/?hl=alfred

The two screenshots reveal how to setup searches to the Accordance app itself.  Once configured, your LaunchBar when triggered properly wouldl pull up either verses or word search directly in Accordance itself.

For example, in Alfred (which is an identical tool to Launchbar), when I initiate Alfred and type "v Matt 3", it pulls up Accordance and displays Matthew 3.   When I type "b Love", it brings up accordance searching for the word "love".

Also, I'm now realizing you didn't want to direct link into Accordance but search the web.  My apologies.  Honestly, the mechanism is likely exactly the same (at least it is in Alfred).  You just have to modify the URL to reflect whichever Bible site you're referencing.

If you don't know the web URL, just go to that website, do a search or whatever action you want to trigger, then copy that URL into your Launcher template and replace the search term with the template value (which appears to be an asterisk for LaunchBar).

Thanks for the information. I ran a search for theology on AccordanceBible.com. Here's the search URL that came back:

https://www.accordancebible.com/search/search.php/#{"terms":"theology","page":1,"limit":20,"tab":"prod"}

Would I replace theology with the asterisk? That's what it seems to me.

I'll look at trying your direct searches in Accordance as well. Those would be super powerful.

Thanks!

Correct!  You would paste than into your Launchbar template and replace theology with *, and then when trigger Launchbar appropriately, it would replace the asterisk with whatever you typed and ask the Mac OS to process that URL (which in the case below would send it to the browser due to the http://).  In contrast, using accord:// with the appropriate parameters as in my examples in the link above will cause Mac OS to open Accordance instead.

Bad news is the URL I posted above is throwing an error message due to it's complicated syntax. It seems LaunchBar wants a cleaner web URL to search the Accordance website. Does Accordance have a cleaner search URL for AccordanceBible.com I can use?

Hmm...  that's unfortunate.  I tried your URL in Alfred and it worked fine (and brought up the Accordance web site with the search term results showing as expected):

I'm not sure if you'll find a simpler URL or not.

Thanks! I'm reporting the issue to LaunchBar to see if they know of a workaround to address it.

LaunchBar wrote back. They successfully got a working URL. Anyone who needs to try this in LaunchBar adds this to the index:

https://www.accordancebible.com/search/search.php?q=*

Hi Nathan, have you tried this syntax for a custom search (this would search the Accordance store) ?

site:accordancebible.com/store ENTER SEARCH TERM HERE

To search the entire Accordance website, just omit "/store" from the string above. Also, I've built Google Custom Search Engines that have been very helpful for things like this.

I haven’t yet since what LaunchBar sent me is what they recommended. I could try it and see. Thanks!

Sorry, I'm late to the party.  I don't know if you are still using LaunchBar.

You can also use this search template for the forums:

And you might also be interested in these actions/scripts:
