Accordance Modules for Contemporary Jewish Commentary w/ High View of Scripture

Greetings all,

 

Please do bear with me in regard to my ignorance of Jewish commentary sources on Scripture in general and Accordance modules in particular. It was suggested by Accordance staff that I reach out to the forum with this inquiry:

 

If I am interested in contemporary Jewish commentary which maintains a high view of Scripture, what Accordance modules would forum members suggest?

I'll confess I don't know what a "high view of scripture" means for you, but the JPS commentaries are excellent, particularly the Torah set. Highly recommended.

I have not responded earlier because I was not sure how to take the phrase a “high view of scripture” as most every scholar devoting effort to the study of the book has a “high view” unless it is particularly designed as an attack. One of my favourite Jewish commentaries in Accordance is The Torah, a Modern Commentary https://www.accordancebible.com/store/details/?pid=Torah%20Modern%20Commentary

This commentary undoubtedly has a “high view of scripture” yet in its preface talks about itself as a liberal commentary. Respectful and nourishing texts may be found in many schools of thought. I am not sure this would be for you but I commend you to look into it.

Well said by all who cast a question regarding "high view of Scripture."  I do love the JPS Torah Commentary (and Haftorah / prophets), but many of the contributors hold to the JEDP (Documentary Hypothesis / Wellhausian) viewpoint.  That isn't exactly my standard of "high view," but again, I'm grateful for that commentary.

 

Check out the Commentators' Bible, which is an abridged translation of the Miqraot Gedolot, by Michael Carasik.  This is a purely rabbinic commentary, which anthologizes several of the well-known meforshim (Jewish commentators), a.k.a. classical commentaries on the Torah.  (I don't know your specific interest or angle when it comes to "Jewish").

 

With that said, if you are interested in Jewish commentary on the Apostolic Writings ("NT"), Dr. David Stern's "Complete Jewish Bible Commentary" is indispensable, though as others have pointed out, it isn't an exhaustive exposition on every verse.  Still worth every penny.

 

And I also love the "Jewish Annotated New Testament," by Mark Zvi Brettler, Amy Jill-Levine, and others, who represent more of a traditional Jewish voice (i.e. not likely to be believers in Yeshua).  This is magnificent for providing Jewish context and thought to the NRSV version of the Apostolic Writings.
