Stars in a Dark World is a wonderful collection of 262 biographies of Saints and histories of Holy Days, originally written as sermons.  They are generally two to four pages long and all have end-notes.  For example, in January, there are twenty-two of these articles, including The Holy Name of Jesus, Saint Hilary of Poitiers, Blessed Martin Luther King, Jr., Saint Anthony of the Desert, The Conversion of Saint Paul, and Saint John Chrysostom.
