ZIBBCOT/NT in preaching/teaching

Hello,

Could you guys share your experiences with using ZIBBCOT/NT in your classes and/or sermons? How useful is this resource for you? Is it one of the best in its niche? Or what would you suggest as good alternatives?

Thanks.

ZIBBCOT/NT are a great set of background commentaries. However, even though I have access to them, I often find myself using the OT and NT Bible Background commentaries included in the IVP collection instead. I'm not sure if it's because the content is a little more concise, but I find myself referencing them all the time. The IVP collection is a great way to increase your library with some wonderful resources, and best of all—it's on sale right now for $99!

Thanks for your input Mark. I already have the IVP collection. So you think that content-wise IVP gives more info in general, even without the images?

ZIBBCOT/NT are a multi-volume set and typically include more detail than the IVP resources. I think you'd do well to have both. I was recently looking at "Rahab" in Ps. 89:10. The attached image shows the difference between the two, which I suppose is fairly typical.

There are several different "doorways" into meaning. Understanding the language is one, but it is often hard to convey the insights to nonspecialists, who can be intimidated by Greek and Hebrew. Another doorway is culture, which is where these resources shine. Today's audiences are comfortable with the idea that other people live have different cultures. After all, we now live in a largely pluralist society, so we are used to dealing with different customs and morés.

I just got these a couple of days ago, and it seems to have a lot of good information! Also, people that use these have great things to say about them!
