Making your own modules

Bibleworks allows you to create your own bible modules. I made good use of this to import some versions not otherwise available. Does Accordance have a feature like this?

Currently you can make your own Notes modules, and import text into user Tools which are general tools. We do plan to allow the import of texts to make a Reference tool which can be displayed in parallel with the Bible texts. This feature is planned for an upcoming upgrade. The requirements for true text modules in Accordance are too stringent to allow users to attempt to make them, Reference tools will match the verses even when some are missing or out of order.

What do you mean "too stringent"? Bibleworks defines an import format (which in its simplest form is just one line per verse with verse number, then text) and it will import it, index it, and do whatever is necessary behind the scenes to make it a fully fledged bible version, equal in features and speed to any built in version.

For comparison purposes, I sucked in the JW NWT, Wycliffe and some other obscure versions into bibleworks, and they work with the full power of biblework's search engine. Sure, I had to massage the text a bit to fit the import format, but since it was an easy format, it wasn't a big deal.

Why is this so hard?

I think you will find that the search capabilities of our tools modules are much greater than those of tools in BibleWorks, and at least equal to their simple Bible texts. Therefore you will be able to search your "user Bibles" more than adequately.

We invest a lot of effort in our Bibles to make the verses match even when books or verses are out of order or missing. We do not expect KJV order for every text. When you view the texts in parallel, each verse appears in the order of the text you are searching, and all the parallel versions you display are reordered to display matching content for each verse. This verse matching is part of the "stringent requirements" I mentioned.

We are very concerned that when we release a feature like this, it is easy for the average user to implement without needing a lot of hand holding from our tech support. It takes many months to train our own developers to make modules, so we have to limit the possibilities for error when we adapt such a feature for the general public. This is why not all features of tools are available for user tools, and the same will apply to user Bibles.

That's right, not every version has the same verse mappings or orderings. That's why Bibleworks has a little dialog box where you can if you wish specify how the verses of one version map to the verses of another version. It's quite straightforward to setup, albeit tedious if the mappings are complex.

Countach, you might also check out this thread from April of last year on the same topic.

In the past, I have imported entire Bible texts from English versions I did not have in Accordance into a custom 'user tool'. And it worked fine for simple e-text searching. Of course it doesn't appear as an English Text but this seems to work fine until the custom user bible tool is released.

Can anything be done to speed up searching?

I searched a whole folder of PDF files and text files much faster with Spotlight than I can search the same texts in Accordance.

I know Spotlight uses caching/cataloguing to speed up its searches, can Accordance do the same? My Accordance folder is almost 4GB.

Going all the way back to Feb of 2007 when this was posted.... Has work been done on this upgrade, or is the feature already in 8.2?

This new feature is still on the list for a future upgrade.

Assumptions and questions about this new feature:

-I assume (correctly per discussion below) it will be able to be opened as a parallel pane along side text.

-Will it also be able to have a browser when opened within its own tab/window? like a commentary?

e.g., I recently created a User Note for which I would like to have this capability. In this User Note I have begun to enter in portions of ANE doc's that are relevant to particular passages. It would be great to be able to not only open it along side the Bible text but also as its own browse-able tab. Simply having the browser keyed to book, chapter, and verse (of the Bible, again similar to a commentary) would be fantastic.
