pder3571
Recently I have been trying to set up a Greek Construct to search for all prepositions followed by anarthrous nouns in the Gospel of John. My columns are set up like this: "PREPOSITION" NOT "ARTICLE" "NOUN" The preposition and noun are Within 1. When I click "Search," I receive 97 responses, but with one very important construct result missing (and perhaps others). The verse first prepositional phrase found in John 1:1a: "In the beginning" is not among the results! What am I doing wrong here? Why is "in the beginning" showing up among the results in verse 2, for instance, but not in verse 1? Thank you. Paul
Λύχνις Δαν
Try this Paul, I agree its odd that 1:1 was left out in your original. No idea why. Thx D
JonathanHuber
Daniel beat me to the reply, and his construct is the right way to negate something. However, if you want the preposition and noun to be within one word of each other, you don't really need to negate anything. If you delete the article part of your construct so you have just the preposition and the noun, you should end up with the same results as Daniel's construct (I get 109 results in the GNT both ways). I'm not sure why your article negation is confusing the results. Edited October 18, 2014 by JonathanHuber
Ken Simpson
Hi, thinking about why your one seems to miss at least John 1:1. Jonathan is right, if you use the “WITHIN 1” parameter then it will perforce exclude an article. but it may miss some with conjunctive nouns and (if you’re interested) substantive adjectives. So I would use something like this.
