I was pretty sure it was in John. It was οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι that made me think so. I tend to prefer the translation “Judeans” since it was a term that tied them to the land of Ἰουδαία. I started skimming over until I found it: 7:15.
There are a few other imperfect verbs that describe the crowds’ reaction before this point too: ἐγόγγυζον in 6:41 and ἐμάχοντο in 6:52.
