syoung Posted January 8, 2010 Posted January 8, 2010 Hi, I'm trying to extract all the Hebrew words from the Old testament. However, with Aramaic in the Old Testament, Aramaic is mixed up in my search results. Is it possible to just search for Hebrew words? I want to use the extracted words to create a complete Hebrew flashcard set. Thanks, Stephen Young
jpkang Posted January 8, 2010 Posted January 8, 2010 I'd set up a custom Range which I'll call "MT Hebrew only" and define it as: Gen 1:1-Jer 10:10; Jer 10:12-Dan 2:3; Dan 8:1-Ezra 4:7; Ezra 6:19-7:11; Ezra 7:27ff Thus you only get included the two Aramaic word proper noun phrase "יגר שהדותא" in Gen 31:47 (interestingly, BHS-W4 only tags the second word explicitly as Aramaic). You can verify this by searching on this range and looking for *_0 (all Aramaic lemmas)

syoung Posted January 9, 2010 Author Posted January 9, 2010 I'd set up a custom Range which I'll call "MT Hebrew only" and define it as: Gen 1:1-Jer 10:10; Jer 10:12-Dan 2:3; Dan 8:1-Ezra 4:7; Ezra 6:19-7:11; Ezra 7:27ff Thus you only get included the two Aramaic word proper noun phrase "יגר שהדותא" in Gen 31:47 (interestingly, BHS-W4 only tags the second word explicitly as Aramaic). You can verify this by searching on this range and looking for *_0 (all Aramaic lemmas) I'll add one addition to the search range. It needs to be Gen 1:1-Jer 10:10; Jer 10:12-Dan 2:3; Dan 8:1-Ezra 4:7; Ezra 6:19-7:11; Ezra 7:27ff; 1Chron.-2Chron. This is because the range, Ezra 7:27ff, will only apply to the end of Ezra and not the Hebrew Bible (at least for BHS-W4).
David Lang Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 JP's approach is probably ultimately more accurate, but you could also just search for this: *@-*_0 This will find all words except those which have been tagged as Aramaic.
jpkang Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 Double oops! I think the primary advantage of defining a range is that it makes it simpler to repeatedly construct many searches without having to keep typing @-*_0.
