Dr. Nathan Parker Posted October 15, 2024 Author Posted October 15, 2024 Thinking about getting one down the road when my iMac Pro is no longer supported.
Dr. Nathan Parker Posted December 7, 2024 Author Posted December 7, 2024 I wanted to go for a Studio Display, but I'm not a fan of the Display running a version of iOS that requires firmware updates in case something breaks. I want something that plug in and just works. Are there other good displays similar to the Studio Display (27" 5K) that would work with a Mac Studio that I could consider. I can go glossy instead of matte screen since where I work, there aren't any bright lights that cause any glare.
DataD Posted December 7, 2024 Posted December 7, 2024 I use a Studio display with a MacBook Pro in dock.... separate keyboard / mouse etc. Very nice display.

David Padfield Posted December 10, 2024 Posted December 10, 2024 I just bought two new Mac Minis (both M4 Pro with 14-core CPU, 64GB memory, 2TB SSD). I had considered buying an Apple monitor, but opted instead for the BenQ 32-inch 4K Thunderbolt Monitor for my office— and I love it. It has a 4k display and adjustable height. As for the connections: One Thunderbolt 3 input (providing up to 85W power delivery), one Thunderbolt 3 output (providing up to 15W power delivery), two HDMI 2.0 ports, one DisplayPort 1.4, one USB-B upstream port, one USB-C downstream port, three USB-A downstream ports, and one 3.5mm headphone jack. This unit was only $1,000 — compared to $2,000 for the Apple display with adjustable height. For the Mac Mini at home I bought a Dell S2722QC Monitor (27 inch 4K USB-C , UHD (3840 x 2160) Display, 60Hz Refresh Rate). The Dell was $279 from Amazon and I love it as well. 1
Dr. Nathan Parker Posted December 10, 2024 Author Posted December 10, 2024 Thanks! Keep me posted on the BenQ especially. I might consider it over the Studio Display. 1
David Padfield Posted December 10, 2024 Posted December 10, 2024 The extra space on the BenQ is wonderful! To me, it was an easy choice over the Apple monitor (even disregarding the $1,000 price difference). The tilt- and height-adjustable stand is great as well. The only thing lacking is a webcam — for that, I bought a Logitech MX Brio Ultra HD 4K ($200, but most people could get by with a $50 webcam).
Daniel Wagner Posted December 11, 2024 Posted December 11, 2024 I have the studio display. It is a beautiful display and 5k gives you a slightly better resolution than 4k. I like it for Bible study with Accordance because I'm looking at text all the time. It may be only marginally better than a 4k screen, but I can see the difference and I appreciate it. Like all Apple products, it costs more than it seems like it should but I seem to love giving Apple my money

Any issues or do they just work? That's been my main concern. I'd pay $$$$ for a good monitor since I plan to use it for years as an investment, but my biggest concern about the Studio Display was the iOS style firmware updates.
Daniel Wagner Posted December 11, 2024 Posted December 11, 2024 I don't recall any firmware updates. There may have been one early on. It works well and I never have any issues with it. Mine is used with a MacBook pro.
Dr. Nathan Parker Posted December 12, 2024 Author Posted December 12, 2024 That's great to know. Thanks!
Daniel Wagner Posted December 13, 2024 Posted December 13, 2024 Actually, there was an update early on, where they improved the camera somehow.

Good to know. I read there was an issue once where Apple stopped signing an iOS release and caused the Display not to update without taking it into an Apple Store, but I guess you weren't affected by that issue. :-)
