Casus pendens in Gen. 17:4

Hi again Robert,

I’ve never really understood what is going on with the casus pendens in Gen. 17:4, אֲנִי הִנֵּה בְרִיתִי אִתָּךְ .

I did a search, and the resumptions are easier to understand inאני הנני  followed by a ptc., or אני הנה followed by a 1CS verb. I don’t understand the resumption in בריתי .

If you had some time to shed some light on this, it would be great.

Thanks.

Michel

Michel,

The LD constituent is the 1cs pronoun אני and the resumptive constituent is the 1cs pronoun attached to ברית. The LD allows an interesting modification of the overall proposition, presumably from the proposition "I am with you" to "my covenant is with you".

Thanks. That's basically what I was thinking, and hoping you would say. I've never agreed with translations such as, "As for me, my covenant is with you."
