Analyzing the Usage of a Particular Word?

I would like to analyze Luke's usage of δε in Acts. Is there some nifty bit of query magic I can do that would compare how δε is translated -- perhaps using a keyed text like the NAS95S?

The common words are not usually tagged with key numbers, so this particular analysis is not possible.

Actually, it all depends on which Keyed Bible text you're using. NAS95S does not tag common words, but KJVS and ESVS both tag numerous occurrences of δὲ. There are 542 occurrences of δὲ in Luke, and a search of the KJVS for all occurrences of key number G1161 (the number for δὲ) turns up 539 occurrences, so that should give you a pretty good sense for how the word is used.

 

Here's the easiest way to do this:

 

1. Select the English word "And" in Luke 1:6 of the KJVS, then option-click the Search button on the Resource palette. This will open a new window displaying every occurrence of G1161. In this window, set the range to Luke by defining a range in the More Options section of the Search window.

 

2. Click the Details button.

 

a. The HITS Graph will show you where δὲ is used most frequently in Luke. It's interesting that δὲ does not appear anywhere during the temptation in Luke 4, a fact which is clearly seen on the Graph.

 

b. The Analysis tab will show you all the different ways the KJVS translates δὲ. The presence of other key numbers indicates that the words found were tagged with both the key numbers for δὲ and other words.

 

c. The Analysis Graph and Analysis Pie Chart, when set to Word, will give you some interesting visual breakdowns of how the word is translated.

I was able to get this to work even using the NASB 95. You can do a search using OPTION L, and then type in G1161. This would give you all the occurrances of the Key G1161. You can then go to the details box to view all the different usages, as follows:

 

Total number of verses = 357

(total number of verses displayed = 357)
