Unicode paste to Word font issue

Ben

Recommended Posts

When I paste Gk text into Word, with Unicode export checked, the Unicode comes out in three fonts, the one I'm using, say Times NR, and then Geneva and something called Minion Pro Italic.

Several of the letters of the alphabet, including etc, iota and upsilon come out in italics. Even a select-all and font change to Times doesn't change them.

Thanks.

I think you need to select a Unicode font in Word, and then select Paste Special as plain text.

Hi Helen. I've done that and I get the three fonts. Regardless of whether I paste as Unformatted Text or Styled Text, I get this weird combination that no formatting can fix.

What happens if you paste into TextEdit? And from TextEdit to Word?

Good thinking, Helen. That seemed to work fine, although it's not ideal to have to do that every time. Any thoughts on why Word would mess with the formatting?

Just curious--are you using Word 2004 or v. X? And for whatever it's worth, none of the three fonts you listed include Greek glyphs (the Microsoft Windows-supplied Times New Roman contains a much fuller set of non-Latin glyphs, but not the Apple-supplied version).

Any chance you could upload a screenshot or a sample Word file with the text in the three (or more) fonts?

JP already asked for the 2 bits of info I was going to ask.

Also, what is the font set to in the Accordance window you're copying from?

Hi guys.

Word 2004, Acc 7.3.

You're right about the fonts not containing Gk glyphs, or at least all Gk glyphs. What Words seems to have done is receive the text in say, Times NR or Geneva, and outputted it into the document using the TNR glyphs it could, then falling back on Minion Pro Italic, and then falling back again on Geneva or TNR.

If I select all and choose a font that does support all the required glyphs, it's fine - this is what I was doing wrong yesterday.

Can't seem to upload a .doc or a .zip: "Upload failed. You are not permitted to upload this type of file"

I can email it if needs be.

Thanks.

Edit: Joe, I'm not sure what you're asking; I'm using Helena as my Gk font ofcourse, and I have English texts set to Optima, but I'm obviously not pasting from them.

Your assessment is right on. But pasting as plain text should remove this font information, allowing the "current selection font information" to govern the paste. Are you sure that TNR is not the default paragraph style for your Normal tempate?

I'm sure it is TNR. I don't usually use TNR for anything, preferring Optima and Georgia for writing, but I've never bothered to change the normal.dot, so I might change that to Times proper now, which I guess should mean pasting Unicode won't cause any dramas.
