  1. Hi. I'm using Libre Office (same as Neo Office and others) and it handles hebrew pretty well; certainly better than Word. But for some reason, when i paste some verses of hebrew, it puts the verse numbers at the END (i.e., left) of the first line of each verse, rather than at the beginning (right) of the verse, as it appears in Accordance (when the verse numbering preference is set to 'before paragraph'). i can paste the text with the verse numbering 'above paragraph' ok, but if i then delete the return at the end of the number, the text moves up to the right of the number, and the number is again at the left end of the first line of hebrew instead of at the beginning (right) of the hebrew. anyone know a trick for getting the verse number to paste to the right (beginning) of the hebrew, just as it displays in accordance? thanx, john burnett

    Hebrew root search for shem

Hi, I'm trying to do a root search for shem in Malachi. To do this I right clicked on the last word in Mal 3:16 and selected "search for"/"root". In the search box I get [suffix] (which isn't problem, I can delete that) but the root it gives me is 2 nuns. When I search for that I naturally get all kinds of results. Also when I roll over the word shem I get (ננ), i.e. 2 nuns, for the root. Is this a mistake or a code for something? thx Charles
  3. How can I search for Qal Passive Participles? When I select the tag [verb passiveParticiple] it only yields Aramaic results. If I add "Qal" it doesn't yield any hits. If I search for [verb qal participle] I seem to only get active participles (all "coat-tails" and no "car-tools"). What am I doing wrong?

    Greek/Hebrew Flashcards

Could Accordance have an original language flashcard option? Perhaps I want to learn all of the words which occur in the NT 10 times or more. I would like to be able use flashcards right within Accordance, or perhaps have an export to Quizlet option.
  5. When the Instant Details pane is not displayed and I click on a verse reference in any of my Hebrew tools the following popup is displayed: If the Instant Details pane is displayed just hovering a verse reference results in the same popup. This seems oddly similar to the possible bug I reported yesterday that Helen confirmed for me but they may not be related.

Is it still impossible to search for maqqefs or cantillation marks? If so, are there any plans to allow for this in the future?

    Searching in Hebrew

This is, hopefully, a simple question, though I have thus far been unable to find any resources - how would one type in the search bar in Hebrew? At the moment, if I were to switch my language to Hebrew (which allows me to write in most text editors, like Microsoft Word for instance, in Hebrew), I am unable to type the word I'm looking for into the search bar - my keystrokes appear as either black rectangles or Hebrew vowels (nikkud), but no letters. One method I can use is to find the word in existence already and right click it and go to "Search for". Another method is to go to Search -> Enter Lexical/Inflected Forms and choose a word. Is there an easier method for simply typing in the search bar in Hebrew? I am using the most-updated version of Accordance, on the most-updated version of Windows 8.1.
  8. After watching a recorded training seminar yesterday I realized that I could triple click a greek word in Mounce Greek Dictionary or KM for Hebrew and have it take me to my default lexicon. I actually have my default lexicon set as KM for Hebrew and Mounce for Greek. Based on the seminar these are not the best choices. Of those in my library, which would be the best choice for Hebrew and Greek?
  9. Hello All, I was wondering if anyone knew of a blog or podcast that regularly (daily or weekly) makes posts showing or discussing the exegesis of Greek or Hebrew texts? I would like to read or listen to something like this to keep me excited about delving into the biblical languages. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

    SBL Hebrew font problems

I'm having a vexing font problem. A short history will provide the context for my headache. - on the advice of a colleague, 3 weeks ago I did a clean install of Mountain Lion. As my colleague hinted, after this and upon reinstalling LibreOffice and Pages I found that the SBL Hebrew font displayed vowels and accents perfectly (previous to this, the vowels and especially accents were off and only displayed correctly in Mellel). This was true for Ezra SIL and other Biblical Hebrew fonts. - for some reason, in the past 3 days, the font problem returned, but with a twist. SBL Hebrew (and SBL Biblit, Ezra SIL, etc.) had really weird spacing problems in LibreOffice, OpenOffice, and NeoOffice (tried them all), but look beautiful in Pages and TextEdit (and, of course, Mellel). - I did some house-cleaning (emptied font caches, re-installed fonts, etc.; used Onyx, Yasu, and others), but nothing works to fix the problem. As it stands, the fonts works only in Apple programs and Mellel and displays offset vowels and accents in all other Office suites. Does anyone have any idea what the source of my problem might be? I'd prefer not to do another clean install with Mavericks over the Christmas break (I found out last time that using a Time Machine backup to restore after the clean install of Mountain Lion brought didn't work to fix the font problem; only a clean install of OS and all programs and fonts worked the magic.) Thanks for any help. Edit: here's a pic of what the font looks like in NeoOffice
  11. The search command 'el <WITHIN 1 Words> shwb (HMT-W4) returns 104 verses. Two expected results are missing: Is 44:22 and Jer 3:7. Why does the search omit these verses? The attachment contains the command using Hebrew. P.S. How do you enter Hebrew letters directly into the post? Missing search results.pdf
  12. Is there a way to find all or most of the direct speech quotations through Hebrew construct search? If there is a way, can someone please post a screenshot or explain how to?

    Westminster Hebrew Syntax

"The Westminster Hebrew Syntax is a new database project that has been in development for the past five years, and is nearly ready for distribution. Syntax is the analysis of whole thoughts, clauses, and their parts, phrases. Syntax, far more than the study of individual words, is the study of the meaning of the text." http://www.grovescenter.org/GC/projects http://www.grovescenter.org/bugzilla/describecomponents.cgi?product=WHS I wonder if Accordance will acquire this database in the future and how it will compare with Syntax Database Accordance already has?
  14. Acc 10.2.1 Accordance crashes when trying to set up a Hebrew construct search for two verbs within a range. See attached. It also crashes for other types (lemma's etc). Greek construct for chapter range is working fine. Am I doing something wrong or is this a bug? How can I set up the search as shown in the picture in the meantime? I want to find relations between aspects of verbs within larger parts of texts, so not restricted to separate verses. Thanks, Steven
  15. Micah 5:4, in all English translations too which I have access, says "the Lord His God." However, the LXX uses the third person plural pronoun. Is there any reason, inherent in that verse, in Hebrew, that would either require "their" or even allow "their" as a correct translation. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Joey
  16. I recently purchased the 'First Hebrew Primer' and was making my way through the first couple of pages enjoying the great sound files that are included in the primer. However, when I got onto page 4 the sound files stopped working... and the same goes for every page from there on. So, I'm wondering if I'm missing something but otherwise the sound files appear to be 'broken'. Any help would be greatly appreciated. David
  17. How do I export a text file of every word that is a hit for a search, including its address and parsing? For example, if I search for [VERB piel] I get 6490 hits. But then I want to export all those hits with the following information: Genesis 1:2 מְרַחֶפֶת is רחף Piel Participle FS Absolute Genesis 1:22 וַיְבָרֶךְ is ברך Piel wawConsecutive 3ms Genesis 1:28 ... The closest I can get is with the analytics drop-down menu on the upper right --> word count totals: analysis.By choosing the details, I can get a list of the inflected forms with their parsing and the number of times that that form occurs. But I also need chapter and verse for each occurrence. John
  18. A question was asked on Twitter about the possibility of having a Hebrew text display verbs in different colors than the rest of the text. A search for all verbs is the best way to do this: 1) Make sure your Search Text is set to a grammatically tagged Hebrew text, like the BHS-W4. 2) Make sure you are set up to search for "Words" instead of "Verses" in the top-left corner of the window. 3) From the top menu, choose Search < Enter Tag < Verb... 4) Don't select anything from the drop down boxes, just click "OK" right away. This will set up a search that will find all the verbs in the Hebrew Bible 5) Run the Search http://accordancefiles1.com/images/Twitter/Hebrew%20Verb.jpg By default, all your search results will show up in red. Since all verses should have at least one verb in them, you should be able to read everything in context without any additional work. Feel free to add a parallel English Bible if you like.
  19. Thanks for the education. I am currently an English only user. I am struggling with a problem that is most likely answered easily by a Hebrew student. In Isaiah 7:14, 8:8 there is a name "Immanuel". In Isaiah 8:10 I see what appears to me to be the exact same two words (with, suffix us, and god). They are different when the instant details scroll over them the first two are "Immanuel" the last is "with us God". I am using the BHS-W4 tagged text The question comes when I search by selecting the words in Isaiah 8:10 and then copying and pasting into the search bar. The results are Isaiah 7:14, 8:8. Not what I expected, I do not even get the verse that I copied from. When I separate the phrase into its parts I get Isaiah 8:10 as well as many many more results, but not Isaiah 7:14, 8:8. This is again not what I expected. I am sure that someone who knows Hebrews can explain this to me. Thank you for the education. To be more specific; 1. How do we know when form a name and when they don't? (Context is my guess) 2. Why am I not getting expected results? Thanks

    Holladay or equivalent?

Will Holladay ever be released for Accordance? Or is there already an equivalent available? I already have BDB (not the complete version), but Holladay's concordance has some features I like better than BDB.
  21. How do you do a word search in original language using the keyboard (not cut and paste)? I have UBS4 opened, tap the search, and when I type on the search field for word search, it is always in English. Thanks Ferdinand
  22. I was wondering if any of you Hebrew scholars might be able to help with the translation of this brief inscription on stone? I have not seen this in person and am having difficulty making out several of the letters, some of which are not clear or have been chipped. I am also too new to Hebrew to contextualize the words without their vowel markings, so I turn to you experts I've attached the photo here. Enjoy, and thanks for any help.
  23. I was searching for יוֹם in the HMT-W4 via the construct search window. My criteria was: noun, common, plural, masculine. I further required that they agree in lexical form and number. But since I was getting hits that included the absolute, which I didn't want, I later selected "NOT" absolute in the noun drop down criteria. Oddly, I still received results with the plural absolute יָמִ֔ים in Leviticus 8:33 and elsewhere. I thought this hit should have been excluded based on the "NOT" absolute selection? Have I set up the criteria incorrectly or missed something?
  24. Could someone please explain to me how to search for compound words in Hebrew? I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to get accordance to search this way, even when I am using quotation marks and/or equals signs. For example, I want to search for every occurence of וְיָשַׁב in Samuel, but Accordance seems to only want me to search for "ו" and "יָשַׁב" separately. How do I tell Accordance that I want to search for these exactly as I have pasted them above? Thank you, Tim
